A hands–on quick–start to Ruby on Rails development
We’ve teamed up with fellow Sydney railers Pandora Squared to provide an Introduction to Ruby on Rails Development half–day workshop as part of this year’s webDU. If you’re a developer interested in learning how to rapidly create quality web applications, then this intensive half–day workshop is for you.
Tim Lucas has over five years of web application development experience, over a year of experience in commercial development with Ruby on Rails and released two of the first Rails plugins. With a background in software and usability in the education field, Tim’s friendly and knowledgeable approach will guide you through the Rails development maze.
After working as the head of design for AOL Australia for 4 years, Hunter Nield is now the lead architect at Pandora Squared and has been leading their Ruby on Rails social software platform for over a year. With a deep understanding of both Ruby and Rails, Hunter will give you hands–on help to ensure you take the most from this experience.
As it's going to be an action–packed half–day, to make the most of it you’ll need to have experience in developing database driven web applications and a basic understanding of object oriented programming principles. We’ll teach you everything you’ll need to know about Ruby and Rails, but any prior experience will be a bonus.
After a thorough introduction to the Ruby language we’ll dive head first into creating your first Rails application: Railshop.

It’s an online shop with categories and products, backed by a full object model, an adminstration interface and covers all the necessary Rails machinery you’ll need to start writing your own web applications.
As a bonus, we’ve included on the CD extra course material that you’ll be able to work on after you leave; covering:

A$365 includes the half-day instructed workshop with laptop provided (yes, you can bring your own too), printed workbook and CD with all the code plus a few extras to continue with after it’s over.
The workshop will be held March 1 2006 9am sharp at Clifton’s Computer Training Facilities, Level 2, 200 George Street George St, Sydney Australia.
The workshop is open to everybody, but places are strictly limited. To book your spot phone Vivianne at Daemon on 02 9380 4162 or email vivianne@daemon.com.au.
We’ve created a Flickr group where we’ll post our photos and feedback from the day. If you’re an attendee then join the group, post your photos and network with your fellow Railers.
Bummer! Get in touch and tell us why, and you can still join the fun with the flickr group and keep an eye on the Ruby on Rails Workshops list for Australia. If you want a workshop in your Australian city then submit a wish at rubyonrailsworkshops.com.
